My new Laptop!
December 30, 2007
After a long and tiresome search for a usable and inexpensive laptop for my personal use I have found and bought Compaq Presario C714NR, which is a speedy dude with Intel Dual core and 1MB RAM. It has a flat screen, CD/DVD RW, Broadcom WLAN/Bluetooth, Realteck Fast Ethernet and 120GB HDD. The most wonderful thing (why it took me so much time to investigate) is that it runs Linux beautifully. It comes with Vista but I did not like the response time of Vista on this machine. Linux runs like hell on it.
It seems that it will add a lot of efficiency i my research and development projects ![]()

What distribution of linux have you gotten working on this laptop? My sister got one of these for Christmas, and I’ve tried Ubuntu and Kubuntu on it, but have had tons of problems. Suspend/Hibernate doesn’t work right, there are issues with the graphics drivers, I couldn’t get the wired networking to work, and wireless networking was a huge pain in the neck to get working, and I still didn’t get it completely functional.

Ubuntu should work!? Although I’ve installed fedora core 8. It is just fine. Suspend and hibernate will be a problem with linux because power settings are still in progress in linux. The network adopter is built in kernel so it should be smoothly configured. The wireless has some issues because its broadcom and they have hidden there architecture from developers. Although there are wrappers which can handle it for you. In these wrappers they use windows drivers to get the work done. try this: http://ohioloco.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3975998.
I recommend this one: http://dnmouse.webs.com/wirelessdrivers.htm. But to tell you the truth I have not found enough time to check them out!
